A tune said to come from the Little People -- The Gold Ring..

Fri Oct 22, 2010 11:28 am by fiddle4u

Me Playing a Jig,, mixed with Fairy Stories, I think it was Séamus Ennis, who said he got it from one of the '' Little People '' if he gave over his Gold Ring -- '' And he did , and here's the tune '' -- lol....

Sh*t, I've Forgotten the Words Empty Sh*t, I've Forgotten the Words

Post by Madra Rua Fri Aug 13, 2010 2:02 pm

I can't vouch for how Irish this is, and pardon the profanity, but I think anyone who's ever sung at a session can relate.
(Strangely enough, I couldn't find a YouTube video of the song to post, so I'm still looking for the tune. Laughing )

Sh*t, I'VE FORGOTTEN THE WORDS

My heart is a-pounding within my breast,
I know the first line, forgot all the rest,
A memory like mine is a hell of a pest,
excrement, I've forgotten the words.

Chorus
On a packet of fags I'd written them down,
Threw them away as I drove into town,
Now I feel a bit of a clown,
'Cos, sh*t, I've forgotten the words.

The last time I sang them, they went down a treat,
Dogs were a-howling out on the street,
But just spilt my beer all over my feet,
'Cos, sh*t, I've forgotten the words. (Chorus)

Sometimes they come back line by line as I sing,
Tonight I can't seem to remember a thing,
Ian McCalman will know, I'll give him a ring,
Oh sh*t, I've forgotten his number. (Chorus)

So come all you singers, practice your verse.
If you do not, you surely will curse,
But I remembered the tune, so it could have been worse.
Next time I'll remember the words. (Chorus)

I did a bit of research on Mudcat.

The song appears to be of Scottish origin, and is available as Track 5 on Hamish Imlach's "More and Merrier" CD. Unfortunately, the CD is out of print. If you want a copy, theres ONE available on Amazon.uk for a mere £ 50 sterling.

But one of the poster on Mudcat said that the tune was from the Scottish tune "Muckin' O'Geordie's Byre", so I looked that up on YouTube.

You can make the words fit to this tune:

Actually, there is a movement afoot by the three regular Finbarr's Session singers to present this at some point.

But we have to practice so we don't forget the words.

I found the tune in a more recognizable form! It's "Westering Home!"
